Surente is a solo exhibition of work by Adrián Bastarrachea. This prodigiously talented artist is coming to the attention of the world and we are delighted to contribute to this process.
Adrián has coined the word Surente which would loosely translate as ‘Southent- to be of the South (of Mexico)’. The word encapsulates the beauty and struggle of life in this, often undervalued part of the world.
Adrián is himself truly Surente having grown up, studied and honed his art in the south of Mexico in Yucatan. He wants to tell the Surente story through his imagery and he has the tool kit to do it; he is a superb colourist and is comfortable with multiple materials and techniques.
Drawing is at the heart of his work and his images hover between abstraction and representation. Adrián wants to capture moments and stories that can be at the same time both banal and terrifying. We welcome you to Adrián Bastarrachea’s world of imagery where great beauty disguises moments of crisis and the stories of the Surente.
