Melancolía

SOLO SHOW DANA BARBECHO NOVEMBER- DECEMBER 2020 At: OUTSIDERS GALLERY

Diabla de Agua (Dana Barbecho) was born not from flames and fear but from tears and tragedy. Her beautiful, fragile characters are permeated with melancholy and a delicate stillness, pensive thought and musing. She creates nostalgic fairies, witches and cyborgs, full of longing, trepidation and a great curiosity about the world they have been born into at the hands of the Water Devil.

Born in the heart of the eccentric and eclectic Mexico City, Diabla de Agua was encouraged to paint and draw as soon as she could hold a pen and paintbrush. She submerged herself in learning everything she could about the human figure, working in different mediums such as oil, pencil and pen, eventually studying conceptual and contemporary art at ‘La Esmeralda’ School for painting, sculpture and engraving. After leaving formal study Diabla de Agua began to etch her works onto the human flesh. She views tattoo art as a way to bring her images to life, giving them movement through the skin and the body as they decorate it.

This sorceress is no stranger to adversity which is what informs her pieces that are steeped in melancholy and sadness. Her creations, which are almost always female, are also inspired by Classical, Medieval and Primitive Art. They are the spirits of folklore and fables, magical and fantastical thought. Most importantly these beings are the portal of catharsis that allows Diabla de Agua to turn pain into pleasure, even if that pleasure is laced with pain. She gives these characters the strength to exist and they give her the strength to truly live.
